Summer Sips: All-American Sangria

May 26, 2017

Today we’re making a super festive red. white and blue sangria in honor of Memorial Day weekend!

My hubby and I are kicking off the holiday weekend with a game night with some friends, and I am so excited!  I get super competitive at silly games!  My family has always been big game players, and there have been many a holiday that the games have gotten heated…mainly because members of my family cheat…you know who you are!! Ha! Even if we don’t win, I feel sure there will be no shortage of belly laughs, yummy food and THIS little drink!  Cheers!

Ingredients:

1 bottle dry white wine

2 cups of sparkling lemonade-I used Sanpellegrino Limonata.  So yummy, plus I’m a sucker for their pretty packaging!

1/2 cup of vodka-Because there are so many berries you can use a flavored vodka-raspberry, blueberry, vanilla, or just plain.  I used Tito’s non-flavored vodka

Juice from 1 lemon

Pint of rasberries, rinsed and dried

Pint of blueberries, rinsed and dried

4 Granny Smith apples, cut into thin slices

Small star cookie cutter (optional)

Festive stirrers (optional)

For this recipe your main base is white wine. You want something crisp and dry because the fruit and sparkling lemonade add the sweetness.  Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc or a dry Riesling would be good.  I used this Pinot Grigio.

There was a season of my life where it seemed like everyone was having babies, and I was attending baby showers every weekend.  I made lots of diaper cakes and always put this little wine in the middle.  I would usually get a text or call when the mama took the cake apart and discovered it.  The giggle it brought always made me smile!  I mean, after you change all those diapers you may need a little time out!

Directions:

Pour all ingredients into a pitcher and stir well.  Refrigerate 1-4 hours before serving.

For the apple stars, cut your granny smith apples into very thin slices and use a small star cookie cutter to make your shapes.  Now I will tell you that because of the core and the size of my apples, I could only get 2-5 stars out of each apple.  At one point I questioned if this was worth the work….did I just spend 20 minutes cutting star shapes out of apples?!  Yup, sure did, and those little stars make me smile, but you may decide to skip that step!

My boys thought the apples were really fun, and I made them their own version with just lemonade, water, berries, and apple stars.  Our star cookie cutter came from this set of cookie cutters that we have used over and over for cookies, pancakes, sandwiches, and playdough, but I also linked just some smaller star sets at the bottom of the post!

These stirrers came in a fun little set for $1 at my favorite spot….the Target Dollar Spot!  Gets me every time!  They have tons of cute patriotic stuff right now that would be perfect for this weekend and the fourth of July!

I threaded a raspberry and blueberry on each one just for fun!  I hope this sangria makes it’s way into your summer celebrations!

It is not lost on me that while this weekend may be full of barbeques, pool time and fun, Monday is a sad day for so many.  It is a day to remember those that have sacrificed it all for our country, and words cannot express the gratitude I feel.  I hope you take a moment to reflect and appreciate the freedoms we are so blessed to enjoy!
