I am so excited to share Will’s new DIY bed!!
My Will turned three in January (insert tear!), and it was time for the converted crib/toddler bed to go!
Luckily his amazing Poppy and Dad stepped in to build him something special just for him!
Let me first share a little background….
A story of mom guilt
When I was pregnant with my oldest, Logan, I was SO excited about setting up his nursery in a blank, untouched room we had upstairs. At the time I was a full time dance teacher and directed the high school’s dance team. Karen, a very talented mama of one of my girls, painted all our props and show sets and had offered to come paint a nursery for me as a gift! I showed her my teal, green and yellow paisley and gingham crib bedding, and said I was thinking of using some owls…Y’ALL…she blew me away and painted every dang inch of that room!!
So incredibly sweet!
SO, in true first time mom style, I slapped Logan’s name and monogram on every baby item that every blog, website and other mama told me I “needed” and started this wonderful journey of motherhood with my first baby boy!
Fast forward to being pregnant with Will, toddler Logan now in tow…I took down everything that said Logan, bought a couple of things that said Will, and BOOM, nursery complete! Logan got a new big boy room and infant Will was none the wiser, BUT my mama heart was feeling a little guilty….
Enter Poppy, Dad and a Plan
As Will’s third birthday approached I asked my Dad, aka Poppy to the boys, if he would be willing to build a bed just for Will. I wanted him to have something special that was just for him, and of course, Poppy agreed!
We found these plans online and decided this was the bed!! The plans specify all the wood and cuts needed. Gathering all the materials and painting after the fact were my jobs…my sweet hubby and Dad spent a Saturday and half a Sunday doing the rest. They did an AMAZING job!
If you read my recent post here, you know my Dad (Poppy) just passed away a couple weeks ago. It means so much to me that a little piece of him is in my sweet Will’s room. Between Karen’s painting and this bed, my Will better get used to this room…because I may want to keep it this way forever! Eighteen year olds love owls and cabin beds, yes???
Beddy’s Bedding
We got the bed upstairs and Will LOVED it, but with the mattress enclosed, making the bed was definitely a challenge! I was SO excited to find Beddy’s bedding. It is one piece that goes on like a fitted sheet and unzips on both sides. The sheet is sewn in, and the top blanket is backed with minky…the super soft material that was on so many of my boys’ baby blankets. It also has an extra flap of minky to cover the zipper while you sleep.
It is all machine washable and the top blanket can also zip completely off if you want to wash it seperately.
Beddy’s has tons of adorable patterns, but with all we got going on in this room, I opted for the simply white and I love it! Coordinating shams are included, and I got this adorable striped sham from their site as a little pop of color.
When Will wakes up, he just has to zip it closed, and his bed is made! No excuses kid! Haha! These come in all sizes, so I’m super temtped to grab one for our king sized bed too! Just SO easy!
The sale ends TONIGHT (5/30), but Beddy’s currently has buy one, get one 50% off of everything on their site with the code MEMOBOGO. I did not grab a blanket for Will’s bed since it is enclosed, but so many of the comforters have coordinating blankets for the foot of the bed that are adorable, large (60×80) and also backed with minky! You can buy the comforter and get the blanket 50% off or grab 2 comforters for your littles (or yourself!) You can shop their site here.
Listen, mamas…
Our children don’t need fancy nurseries, big boy beds or “stuff” to feel important or loved by us! That mama guilt can be real sometimes, but the truth is, you are doing an AMAZING job! Give yourself some grace, and know that the time, energy and emotion you so freely give to your children is never in vain!
Our family and friends sharing their talents for my sweet boys is what really made this project so special to me! I can tell them someday how Karen so carefully painted each little owl detail, and how Poppy worked meticulously to make sure every angle matched up just right! Dad learned to use power tools and carried this whole bed upstairs by himself….and Mom and Nanny drank coffee and watched!
Just kidding….someone had to be watching the boys!
Sweet dreams little Will! You are SO loved!
